Nehu – Hawaiian Anchovy

Nehu (Encrasicholina purpurea) Hawaiian Anchovy – size 7.5cm
Nehu were an important bait fish. They were very common in the inshore waters. They were netted and used as bait for Aku (Katsuwonus pelamis) fishing. They were kept alive and thrown into the water when Aku were found. They would then use poles with just a bare hook no reel and pull the fish in one after another. This one was washed up on a beach.
