Whitecheek Surgeonfish (Acanthurus nigricans) メガネクロハギ – Goldrim Surgeonfish – size 20cm
The Whitecheek Surgeonfish is rare in Hawaii. The only place that I have seen them was off of Makahuena Point on Kauai. They are very similar to (Acanthurus japonicus). The Whitecheek Surgeonfish has a small oval white spot just under the eye and thin yellow bar further back on the caudal fin. (Acanthurus japonicus) has yellow on the base of the pectoral fin. There were several Whitecheek Surgeonfish off of Makahuena Point. The yellow on the back of the body would appear when they were excited and then fade away. Kauai 2020
