Hawaiian Chub – Nenue

Hawaiian Chub (Kyphosus hawaiiensis) Nenue
The Hawaiian Chub is a Hawaiian endemic fish. Its features are in between that of the Highfin and the Lowfin Chubs. They are also sometimes all yellow. I have seen two of them change from blue grey to yellow. The same fish is in all of the pictures in this post at the same snorkel spot. At first, I thought that it just had a yellow spot on its snout. When it got to this stage, I started to take pictures. Kauai 6-10-2008

Same Hawaiian Chub getting yellower. Kyphosus hawaiiensis was accepted as a species in 2008. Kauai 7-26-2008

The Hawaiian Chub is now all yellow and white. 8-3-2008.

In 2015 the same Hawaiian Chub was turning black. I thought that it was done for. A low fin Chub in the for ground.

It did recover and was looking good. In March of 2020 we were shut down due to Covid. After that we never saw it again. Kauai 2019
