7-11 Crab (Carpilius maculatus) アカモンガニ – size 15cm – Red Spotted – Blood Spotted
A 7-11 hiding in a cave. The Hawaiian story about the 7-11 Crab is that the demigod Maui wanted to eat one and grabbed it. The crab pinched his fingers, and you can still see the bloody fingerprints. The spots are red, and about finger sized. The pincers are very strong and thick shelled. I wouldn’t want to get pinched by one. Kauai 2021

So why do they call them 7-11 Crabs? In the front there are usually 7 spots. In the back, there are 4 more. The number of spots varies from crab to crab and how you define a spot. The normal spots are 4 along the front edge. 3 spots in a row on the top of the carapace. 4 more along the back of the carapace. The edges of the back 4 are barely visible in this photo. Kauai 2022

Same 7-11 as the last one. Here you can see the close front two spots. The one further up is an extra one. I was trying to get all of the spots. They are not very cooperative of crabs, and I think I mentioned they can crush your fingers. Kauai 2022
