Variegated Lizardfish (Synodus variegatus) ヒトスジエソ – size 40cm
The Variegated Lizardfish looks much like the other Lizardfish and particularly like Synodus binotatus. S. binotatus has two small round dots on its snout. This lizardfish has two not so round dots and two dark blotches further back towards the eyes. The Variegated Lizardfish can have a lot of red sometimes and the young ones particularly are quite red. I saw two Variegated Lizardfish, but the large one took off before I could take a picture. The smaller one took off just afterwards, but it settled right next to the large one. I was able to get pictures of them after all. Amami 2026
