Sooty Tern – セグロアジサシ

Sooty Tern (Onychoprion fuscatus) セグロアジサシ
Sooty Terns are found mainly in tropical waters around the earth. They Breed on sandy islands and are usually seen far offshore. We would rarely see them near Kauai but sometimes there would be lots of them that were following the fish. Kauai 2007

Sooty Terns are similar to the Bridled Tern but have darker backs, darker underwing tips and their white eyebrows are thicker and stop over the eye. Kauai 2007

This is an old photo I took of the Sooty Tern colony on Palmyra Atoll airstrip. You had to be careful not to step on the eggs. Fortunately for the birds the island was uninhabited at the time. People have lived there from time to time. There was a wreck of a crashed airplane at the end of the airstrip when I was there. Palmyra Atoll 1984
