The Ruddy Kingfisher has a wide diet. Here one is eating a centipede. It was getting dark, and I could hear it calling. It was on a powerline and flew off to some bushes about 10m away. I was surprised to see it come back with the centipede. They eat bugs lizards, frogs, fish and most things that are smaller than them and move. Amami 2024

It looks like this one is eating a cicada, which are very abundant during the summer. Amami 2024

The Ruddy Kingfisher is shy and hard to find in the open. I have often head them calling very close to me without ever being able to find them. I have seen them fly by occasionally, but the only pictures that I have got of them so far have been from my house. Amami 2024
