Shingle Urchins are found in the surf zone in areas in areas of high energy surf. They are often in areas that are out of the water between waves. The spines are shaped like shingles too protect them from the impact of the waves. Japan has a similar Colobocentrotus mertensii  ジンガサウニ. Kauai 2002
