Melon-headed Whale (Peponocephala electra) カズハゴンドウ – size 275cm
Melon-headed Whales are large black dolphins without a beak. They do often have some white around the mouth. They are very similar to Pigmy Killer-whales in appearance. They have less white on the lips and belly than the Pigmy Killer-whales. The Melon-headed Whales also have very large pods. Kauai 2019

This is the first time I was able to see Melon-headed Whales. They would not come close, but they were in a very large pod. They were very active. The were the right size and shape. they had the right amount of white on the lips too. Fortunately, I had a good lens. Kauai 2019

Here there is a juvenile Melon-headed Whale with some adults. The one next to it is probably its mother. Kauai 2019

A Melon-headed Whale coming up. They were moving fast but they were staying in the same area. I think they must have been chasing fish. They also eat squid and shrimp but at this location and time they must have been after fish. Kauai 2019
