False Killer Whale – オキゴンドウ

False Killer Whale (Pseudorca crassidens) オキゴンドウ – size 600cm
False Killer Whales are very dark with rounded heads. They look a lot like melon-headed whales, but they are bigger. They usually travel in smaller pods than the melon-headed whales too. Kauai 2005

These False Killer Whales were traveling with a large ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) in one’s mouth. They are able to catch large fish, and they will travel with them. I think that they will share it with others from their pod. The shearwaters were looking for scraps. There were also Rough-toothed dolphins that were around too. Niihau 2005

This False Killer Whale was racing the boat. Nice head on shot of it. The pectoral fins of the False Killer Whale are relatively short, and they have a distinct bow forward. Kauai 2005

The False Killer Whale on the left is a juvenile with an injury to its nose. The one to the left has a reflection on its nose. Kauai 2007

The False Killer Whale on the far side is the juvenile with the nose injury. It also has a little white on its lips. I think it is a juvenile traveling with its mother, but it could be a melon-headed whale traveling with False Killers. Kauai 2007
