Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) ハナミノカサゴ – Red Lionfish – Turkeyfish – size 28cm
Common Lionfish have a lot of other names too. I have seen a lot more of these than any other kind of Lionfish, so I am going with Common Lionfish. They have tentacles over their eyes and under their mouth. Long venomous stipes that they use to herd prey into a corner and suck them up. The spines have membranes like on banners. Amami 2023

Common Lionfish also have vertical bars with a line of white dots by the lateral line. White dot behind the pectoral fin, other Lionfish have this dot too. Spots on the sort fins. Amami 2019

Common Lionfish are usually red and white. They can be very dark and look black and white. Amami 2018

Here is a juvenile Common Lionfish. The vertical bars form a V a little behind the pectoral fins. This V is in the adults too. Amami 2023
