
Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) ニワトリ
The Chicken varies widely in appearance.  This is a white rooster at the Ise Shrine. They are considered a sacred bird and protected. Long ago it is said that the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. If it wasn’t for the white rooster crowing, we would be living in a very dark world today. Chickens were domesticated from the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus). Some of the feral Hawaii chickens look much like the Red Junglefowl. Above is a feral Hawaii rooster. Kauai 2004
