Carcharhinus sp.

Carcharhinus sp.
I think that this may be a Bignose Shark (Carcharhinus altimus). It has plain coloration with a bit of a whitish stipe and a darker tip to the pectoral fins. This fits a Bignose Shark. A Sandbar Shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus), I think would have a higher dorsal fin and lack the dark tips of the pectorals. A Galapagos Shark (Carcharhinus galapagensis) would have a darker bottom of the tail. A lot of people just call them gray sharks because they are hard to tell apart. Kauai 2002

If you are wondering how I caught this Carcharhinus sp. shark, I didn’t. I saw a float moving around as I was leaving Port Allen. I was wondering what was under it, so I had a crew member grab it with a boat hook. There was some fishing line a weight and a hook attached to this shark. After we all got enough pictures, we cut it free. Kauai 2002

Whatever this shark was it owes me one.
