Brick Soldierfish – アメマツカサ – ‘U’u

Brick Soldierfish (Myripristis amaena) アメマツカサ – ‘U’u – Menpachi – size 28 cm
The fish on the right is a Brick Soldierfish they are redder and only have a white edge on the pelvic fin. They are commonly called Menpachi in Hawaii. The name Menpachi comes from Japan the Japanese name is different because fish in Japan like in other areas often have more than one name. The Hawaiian name ‘U’u is common to soldierfish. I am sure that that name comes from the sound they make. Stick your head in a cave and listen and you will hear them. If you are blowing bubbles, it may be a bit harder to hear them.
