Crested Ibis トキ

Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) トキ
The Crested Ibis (Toki) was once a common bird in Japan. The last wild Toki died in 2003. Toki had been found in China where they too were in danger. In 1999 a pair of Toki were given to Japan by China. The captive breeding program on Sado Island released the first 10 Toki to the wild in 2008. This picture was taken at the breeding center. I could not find any wild Toki while I was there. Sado 2013

It has been reported that over 500 Toki are living in the wild on Sado Island as of 2023. Sado 2013
